Memorial Day is a national holiday observed annually in the United States on the last Monday of May. It is a day to honor and remember the brave men and women who have died while serving in the U.S. military. This year, Memorial Day falls on May 31st.

As the holiday approaches, many Americans are gearing up for travel to visit family and friends or enjoy a long-awaited vacation. According to AAA, this year's Memorial Day travel is expected to see a significant increase compared to last year, but still remains below pre-pandemic levels.

AAA projects that over 37 million Americans plan to travel over Memorial Day weekend, which is a 60% increase from last year's record low and marks the second-highest travel volume on record since AAA started tracking these statistics in 2000. The majority of travelers are expected to drive to their destinations, with an estimated 34 million hitting the roads, while close to three million are expected to fly.

Despite the increase in travel, the pandemic is still a concern for many individuals. Health officials recommend that travelers continue to practice safety measures to avoid the spread of COVID-19, such as wearing a mask, frequently washing hands, and practicing social distancing.
