Phil Spencer, the Head of Xbox, has revealed that the highly anticipated upcoming game, Starfield, was potentially going to skip Xbox prior to the ZeniMax acquisition. According to an article by IGN, Spencer revealed this information during an interview with outlets including The Guardian and GameSpot.

Starfield, developed by Bethesda Game Studios, is a space-themed RPG set in an entirely new universe. The game was announced at E3 2018 during Bethesda's conference, and initially did not have any platform specifications. However, during E3 2019, Todd Howard confirmed that Starfield would be released exclusively for PC and consoles from Microsoft's Xbox family.

Spencer has now revealed that there was a time when things almost played out very differently. Speaking to The Guardian, he stated, "I've known Todd [Howard] for a long time. We've had many of these conversations where, you know, he and I would joke about 'hey, maybe we'll do something together someday'."

Spencer explained that there was a point when Bethesda was exploring new opportunities for Starfield and other games, and Xbox was not initially at the forefront of those discussions. However, the ZeniMax acquisition changed everything and prompted discussions with Bethesda to bring Starfield and other titles under the Xbox umbrella.

"It just worked out that, as a result of ZeniMax and Bethesda being part of Xbox, this was a game that we could include in our showcase," Spencer said during the interview with GameSpot.

Starfield is set to release on September 11, 2022, and will be a console exclusive for Xbox Series X|S and PC. Fans of the game are eagerly anticipating its release, as it is the first new universe Bethesda Game Studios has created in over 25 years.

In conclusion, Spencer's revelation highlights the importance of the ZeniMax acquisition and Xbox's efforts to secure exclusive titles for its platforms. It also underscores the potential impact acquisitions can have on the industry, as major players in the gaming world continue to explore opportunities to expand their reach and portfolio.
